MILKMEN FALL SHORT IN HOME OPENER TUESDAY NIGHT AT FRANKLIN FIELD.

By, Hannah McIlree FRANKLIN, Wis.— The Milwaukee Milkmen hit the field Tuesday evening for the team’s home opener at Franklin Field, against the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The defending champs showed why they are number one right away! The first inning started off with a diving play by Mason Davis, followed by two strikeouts delivered by starting pitcher Matt Solter. Then it was off to the bats! Logan Trowbridge had the first hit of the evening securing a spot on first base and soon found an even more comfortable spot on second after stealing his third base of the season. Trowbridge was the only Milkman to reach the base path during the first. Joey Gonzalez of the Goldeyes answered to the Milkmen’s Moos in the second inning striking out two batters. Milton Ramos followed suit in the next inning, with a sharp base hit between third and short stop. However, he was left stranded after teammates Michael Gulino, and Kevin Lachance struck, and flied-out, respectively. Aaron Hill brought some speed to the third inning flying all the way the first base; however, his wheels could not quite get him to second. Winnipeg catcher Michael Gulino caught Hill at second base with a sharp throw, resulting in the second out of the inning, which then ended with a fly-out from Brett Vertigan. Raul Navarro ignited a 2 out rally in the top of the fourth for the Goldeyes. Navarro slapped an infield single that was soon followed up by teammates Max Murphy and Logan Hill, allowing Navarro to cross home plate for the first run of the evening. Murphy and Hill however were left stranded after a strike out from Solter. After a stagnant fifth inning the Goldeyes came back on offense after Kyle Martin made it all the way to second due to a throwing error by first baseman David Washington. Max Murphy followed and found his opportunity in a fastball hitting a 2-run homerun over the left field wall putting the score at 3-0 Goldeyes. There was a pair of pitching changes here at routine field, the Goldeyes switching from Joey Gonzalez to Cory Thompson in the bottom of the seventh, and the Milkmen trading out Solter for Ryan Dunne. Solter left the game with a whopping 11 strikeouts in 7 innings. “It was a mix of everything, early was a lot of change ups, got a few guys with the heater here and there. Late in the game it took me till about fifth inning to find my slider and once we found that we were good to go,” said Solter about his outing. Brett Vertigan stepped up to bat in the bottom of the 9th after the Goldeyes misplayed a pop fly in center field. Trowbridge then stepped up to bat knocking in Vertigan for the Milkmen’s first run in the 9th. Adam Brett Walker II, who continued his hit streak to 6 games. Tony Rosselli was next up to try and fight the Milkmen back to a victory, however he hit a ground ball and was narrowly thrown out as the second out of a double play. Just as quick as Cory Thompson came, he was gone leaving Ken Frosch and David Washington to battle for the last out. Washington struck out, leaving the tying run at second and ending the game with the Goldeyes in front 3-1.
